Montessori education has existed for more than a hundred years. That's enough time for science to ask: does it really work? And if so — what exactly, and for whom?
The answer, based on current research, is clear: yes, measurably and meaningfully. But with an important caveat that still accompanies Montessori research. Let's take it step by step.
The Problem with Montessori Research
Montessori research faces one fundamental methodological challenge: how to determine whether the Montessori environment itself shows any effects when families who choose Montessori schools already differ significantly from the average? They are more educated, less stressed, more involved in their children's childhood. How can the effect of the method be isolated from the effect of the environment that chooses it?
The best studies address this problem by random assignment: children are randomly assigned to either Montessori classes or other classes, even if they initially desired Montessori. This method eliminates the selection bias and gives us a clearer picture of the method itself.
Executive Functions: A Consistent Finding
The strongest evidence in favor of Montessori concerns executive functions — a set of cognitive skills that include working memory, inhibitory control (the ability to resist impulses), and cognitive flexibility (the ability to switch between contexts and perspectives).
The 2006 study by Lillard and Else-Quest, published in Science — one of the most cited in this field — examined children in Milwaukee who were randomly assigned to a public Montessori school or other schools. Children aged three and five underwent a series of cognitive tests. The result: Montessori children showed higher executive functions, better reading and math skills, and higher scores in social cognition.
Other studies repeatedly replicate these findings. Executive functions are less genetically determined than, for example, IQ, and are significantly influenced by environment and childhood experiences. And they are strong predictors of success in broader life areas — academic and social success, health, finances, relationships.
Socio-Emotional Development
Research suggests that Montessori children thrive in the area of social cognition — understanding others' feelings, conflict resolution, and cooperation. This is not surprising: mixed-age Montessori groups naturally create situations where older children teach younger ones, and younger children observe and are inspired by older ones. Both roles are cognitively and socially demanding in a way that homogeneous age groups rarely offer.
Academic Outcomes
In the area of academic outcomes, the picture is more mixed. Some studies show significantly better results for Montessori children in reading and math. Others do not show statistically significant differences. The difference often depends on age: the evidence is stronger for preschoolers and first-graders in elementary school, weaker or more mixed for older children.
An important note: academic results measured by standardized tests may not capture what Montessori develops best. Tests measure knowledge and skills. They are less effective at measuring curiosity, perseverance, the ability to learn independently, joy in the process, and intrinsic motivation. And it is precisely these non-cognitive qualities — as economic and psychological research increasingly shows — that are strong predictors of important life outcomes.
Intrinsic Motivation: A Key Finding
One of the most important findings — and one of the hardest to measure — concerns intrinsic motivation. Children in Montessori environments consistently show a higher degree of intrinsic motivation — they do things because they are interested, not because they expect a reward or fear punishment.
This is not trivial. Children who learn because they are interested process information more deeply, retain it better, and apply it better in new contexts. External rewards and punishments as the primary motivation are actually less effective — and this is a topic that deserves more attention in the broader societal conversation about education.
What Science Doesn't Say
Science does not say that Montessori is the only right way. Some children thrive in more traditional environments. Some families have values that the Montessori philosophy does not fully reflect. Science also does not say that there are enough high-quality studies — we still need more randomized research, more data from different cultures, and more follow-up of children into adulthood.
What science does say is this: the way the Montessori environment works — free choice in a prepared environment, uninterrupted work cycles, mixed-age groups, intrinsic motivation instead of external rewards — is consistent with what cognitive science and developmental psychology say about learning. Montessori did not invent it because she had neuroscience laboratories. She invented it by observing children. Science is only gradually discovering that she was right.
